Holiday Weekend Camping

We'd have been camping this weekend. That's just what our family did for the weekend of the 4th of July. Especially with one like this year's where the holiday is on a Tuesday & most professional companies are granting their employees the "bonus" day off on Monday for a four-day extended weekend.

We knew that the campgrounds would be more crowded too. Lots of people get out to camp this weekend. The weather's just right; it's great & warm, somewhat hot. A jacket might be needed in some areas for an evening or overnight chill.

I remember the snacks well. If we headed out to camp just for the weekend, an extended weekend such as this, one thing we definitely made sure to stock up on were our snacks. Our family was big. on. snacks. In the kitchen area of our pop-up camper we had three cabinet doors: top left (right underneath the sink & sharing space with the under part of the sink's basin), bottom left (where our dishpans & cleaning products got stowed away), & bottom right (where our skillets, pots, & pans got stowed away). In the section directly above this area were two drawers where silverware & similar utensils were stowed away.

It was in that section, that shared with the under part of the sink's basin, is where we'd store our snacks. Vertical Rubbermaid containers as well as just bags of snacks. We'd have these & these, which were all full size bags (back then individual bags weren't sold in bulk like this, as they are today) as well as these (especially these) & this. These were all full size bags (back then individual bags weren't sold in bulk like this, as they are today). And all of the "ingredients" for s'mores - that is, before grocery stores got smart & began creating front-of-the-store displays of these, these, & these, at the ready for consumers to grab-&-go. We also had these, which, according to Mom, was made either for the stove top inside the camper, or just for use over the campfire. As I wrote about here & here, I'm definitely a big fan whether relaxing at home or while camping.

We'd have campfires too. Mom, as she enjoyed playing with these atop our dining room table at home, likewise enjoyed messing with the loose newspaper pieces & kindling that we might find to maintain the early parts of the fire. She'd direct the larger tree parts too, though my brother took great care to arrange this as well. I just respected them to do their thing; I enjoyed sitting around it when the smoke wasn't blowing right toward me, especially when I'd not just readjusted my seating only to have the smoke direction to have just changed & it be directly on me all over again. Those times it was Murphy's Law & I was just trying to get my bottom in a lawn chair.

Besides traveling while camping, camp-style meals, & a bunch of other things our family seemed to do just while we'd be "on the road" & away from home, these snacks are a strong memory. ...Though this is far from my style of eating now-a-days...simply a distant, childhood memory of how I was raised.
