It’s these weekends, at the beginning of December, when oftentimes many an extended family gathers together at a rental hall or a relative's house which happens to be large enough to accommodate most everyone who’s likely to arrive (plus a straggler or two! π).
It was at one of these such gatherings, when I remember, before our extended family went by way of the next generation phase, that we played this.
I specifically remember playing this because, not that I was really good at it, rather I typically felt that I had a chance. There’s a timer involved, though it’s not that much pressure, & the creative mentality of how my mind works churned a few fun responses.
*****
I specifically remember the letter was W and everyone
was putting down the famous person’s name as Woodrow Wilson (I think a few even
tried getting a third credit count for the W at the end of his first name π). I believe
I’d teamed up with Dad, & he’d picked this as our entry underneath a gift.
The oldest living first cousin of his generation, a female,
wasn’t having it. She’s the mother of five (& the wife of one! π) & she gave Dad the same look she’s likely given most of them a
time or two…too many! π
I still don’t remember if Dad did get credit (by getting his other first cousins, & some of the
next generation, to plead on his behalf – isn’t that almost the “fun” point of playing this? π
What I do remember
is, that Christmas or the next one, I decided to venture
into our local home improvement store all
by myself & see what I could do about getting Dad some of this as a Christmas
gift.
Little
did I know that, between my price range & my sad & unfortunate knowledge of
this product, I toted up his front sidewalk, from my tiny compact vehicle,
joking & laughing all the way that I got him a hockey stick (definitely not a sport that lights the screen of my
parents’ television set), what he'd later quip to my brother when asked what kind I'd gotten him, would be, “cheap pine” with a
quickness & crispness that almost eliminated the entire extravaganza. (Dad, I worked hard to get you that "cheap pine"!!! ππ) It’s
a really good thing I do love Dad! ππ
