Most of the shoes I had as a young girl didn't come in boxes. Dad had boxes; he had lots of them. In fact, each & every pair of his shoes (except the pair he kept in his workspace for the outside) were stowed back away at the end of each day in their proper shoebox & stacked accordingly into the lower portion of his closet.
No, he's not OCD or anything like that. His education is in engineering & that's also what his life's work became. He's also a military veteran. Dad's basically always believed that in keeping his things together in this way he's taking better care of his things, & that he'll best be able to store more items (as they won't be scattered) as well as keep them in their best condition.
These days, as most of my shoes do come in boxes now, I tend to reuse them often, just not for keeping my shoes in tip-top shape. I use shoe hangers like these & these (links to Amazon as well as the image link in the top left) to keep my shoes organized.
My running shoes come in a larger box size than my dress flats do. I typically keep my running shoe boxes separate in so that when a project comes along that needs a bit more width of space, I've a box ready to efficiently organize & manage it. Otherwise, I typically stick to organizing with the ordinary width shoe boxes I've on hand.
I organize receipts, important mail, crafts, small items, & accessories of all sorts. I use them as emergency gift boxes on occasion, when I've something to wrap up that's small enough to fit in a shoebox & I'm looking to deceive the recipient enough to distort their gift's shape until they see the item.
Whether your shoes are stored this way, this way, this way, this way, or even this way, keep the boxes & enjoy the benefits.
