Something I've reflected on quite a bit recently, along with others, is how people change. Yes, we all change & we're all aware that we all change, yet recently a number of topics, where it mattered that people change were discussed. Pondering this, I recognized about my own changes. For example in the top things of which I would normally have said I did "in my spare time" would have been "baking cookies or sweet breads".
Although I spend plenty of time working with mixing bowls, spatulas, & spoons, I'm not so much of a cookie or bread baker as of late; I've changed. (Though I know many a people who would now be asking, "Have you changed so much that you're never baking cookies or breads again?" To that I respond, "People change. It's continuous & ever-changing.")
As I've changed, I'm remained the same...even in the kitchen. And some appliances & utensils I use in the kitchen have also remained the same. I've been using silicon spatulas for years. I have one of these, which I really like because there's no "joining spot" from the handle to its tip which means that no food pieces can get stuck in the crevasse either slowing me down as I work to weed it out, or simply to lose the "batter" as it were, which, if it's cookie batter, could add up to a quarter or third of a cookie lost. Bummer.
Another staple, which I've kept around since I was a kid, are wooden spoons, which I've extended into many utensils as the years have worn on. To the point where, when I left my parents' house, Mom said, "We've two identical wooden spoons. Since you typically bake with one, take the extra." So I did. One of the things I've always enjoyed about wooden spoons & wooden utensils in general is that they don't scratch, they come in a variety of shapes & sizes as well as slotted or with a flat edge, even a fork & spoon set (as well as Bamboo) for a "gathering size" salad...& matching wooden salad bowl too.
At the same time, I used to be a big fan of the all-in-one measuring cup (or it's more official title: Adjust-A-Cup), which Mom didn't even like to use; I was definitely sent off from their house with the one they had. It might be because I wore it out, where the outside piece with the measurements listed wouldn't stay in place so much (it was obviously time to buy a replacement), or just a change in me. I do still have this measuring cup, while I most often reach for the individual, stackable cups that I can more easily "dig in" to an ingredient bag or container; I use these.
And as I'm now "of age", & eagerly enjoy wine, a change I've made is adding one of these (ha!) to my kitchen utensil drawer. Before I change (again!) I'll share appliances & other items.
